In September, 1914, the 1/7th Middlesex battalion went to Gibraltar, the first Territorial Army unit to go abroad. In February, 1915, they returned home and in March they went to France where they joined 23 Brigade of 8th Division. Their first experience of the trenches came on 19-21st March with a two day instructional period with the 2nd Middlesex battalion near Laventie. According to the battalion diary, James Sweetsur was killed on 21st March but other records show 22nd March. |
